Dibels, Comprehension Freebie and a Giveaway!!

I'm not a huge fan of the Dibels assessment tool but, like it or not, that's what our district uses. We had benchmark testing last week. Since my kiddos last year appeared to have a weakness in their reading fluency, I have focused more on that this year. Now the fluency is much better but retell/comprehension is lower! Uggghhh!! Now I'm trying to find some ideas to help them improve in this area. I made these cards to use in small groups and reading stations. Click here for a copy. I'd love to hear comprehension strategies you use in your classroom.

On a more positive note, I am excited to have almost 50 followers! I have had so much fun blogging the last few weeks! I have loved reading other blogs and getting some new ideas. All the sweet comments everyone leaves provide so much encouragement! To celebrate, I am having my first giveaway!

The giveaway....

and a surprise!!

You can enter this giveaway three ways. You can......

1. Follow my blog and leave a comment.
2. Follow my Tpt store and leave a comment.
3. Blog about this giveaway and leave a comment.

I will pick a winner Saturday using the random number generator when I figure out how to do that (or when Lisa shows me how)! :) Good luck!!

What a Week!!

This was such a long week! I am exhausted! We were Dibels testing (FUN!) so I think that was partly to blame. It changes the routine and that is never a good thing for my kiddos! If I have ever had a group of students that need structure, it is most definitely my homeroom class this year. :)

I am curious as to what everyone plans for their early finishers. I have students who can finish their morning work in about 2 minutes while it takes other WAY longer! The "rule" is the early finishers are supposed to read but they never seem to be doing that! I think I'm going to try journal writing so we will see how that goes. My kids also LOVE mystery word activities so I created some for them to grab when they finish morning work early. Click here for a freebie of the mystery word activity.

I would love to hear everyone's suggestions! I'd love to get some more ideas!

Harcourt Storytown activities and Freebies!

It's been nice hearing from a few people who also use the Harcourt Storytown reading series! It doesn't seem like there are many of us on here! :)

If you follow the series, you know about review weeks. I HATE them! We teach/review the same skill for two weeks as it is. Then....every five weeks there is a review lesson where we teach them all over again. I guess it is good for students to get more practice but I get so bored! Next week is one of those weeks so I am trying to create some activities to make the week a little more exciting!

So far, all I have managed to make are these games/stations for reviewing silent letters. I just listed them on TPT. Click here to check them out.

Click here for a freebie I have TPT with a vocabulary match and spelling words for the pocket chart (Lesson 20).

For spelling last week, we worked on frequently misspelled words. Click here to to see the unit. It includes a concentration game, tic-tac-toe game, words for the pocket chart and ABC order worksheet. Click here for a freebie from the unit.

I'm so excited to have 40 followers! :) Check back soon for a giveaway to celebrate! I'm still trying to decide what to actually give away!

Giveaway, Weight Watchers, The Valentine Bears and a Freebie!

Go visit Miss DeCarbo at Second Grade Sugar and Spice for a great giveaway!

On another note, I am at the end of my first week on Weight Watchers and I am starving! :) Why does all the food that is bad for your have to taste sooooo good! I found myself digging around in my pantry for junk food and debating whether or not it would be okay to eat hot chocolate with a spoon! This is going to be a rough few weeks! After this torture, I better be at least two pounds lighter at weigh in Monday! Lisa, I am expecting a gym partner next week if you are reading this!

One of my favorite Valentine's Day book is The Valentine Bears by Eve Bunting. I just uploaded some activities to my TPT store to go along with the book. Click here to check them out.

And finally, I teach reading and spelling using the Harcourt Storytown series for second grade. Each week, I try to make some things to go along with the weekly unit. Click here for a freebie of what I've made for Lesson 19 this week. It includes words for the pocket chart, a few matching games with vocabulary and reference materials, a word building activity with the syllable skill and reference posters.

Love to Joplin Linky Party and Stations!

I am linking up with Mrs. Wills Kindergarten for a Love to Joplin Linky Party!

What a great idea! I sent lots of materials and hope as many teachers as possible are able to do the same.

On another note, I just posted my Read/Write the Room stations on TPT. I love read the room stations. They are so easy to change out and the kids love them! I made a station for each month of the year and they cover many different vowel sounds.

Here is a freebie from the kit for February! Click here

Enjoy! I'm going to watch the Saints! Who dat! I sure hope they do better than my Tigers!!

Back to the Real World!'s back to work tomorrow! I have to admit, as much as I loved my time off, I am ready to get back to my normal routine. I hope I still feel that way tomorrow after school! :) It's purple and gold day for the kids (Geaux Tigers!) and I'm sure they will be excited about the big game.

I have been working today on activities and stations for February. It's hard to believe Valentine's Day is just around the corner! I just uploaded a few to my TPT store.

Here is a free plurals worksheet from the packet. Hope you can use it!

Have a great week!

My First Blog Award!

I'm so excited to get my first blog award! Now I'm going to really have to get busy and post more! :)

The rules for this award are.......

1. Thank the person who presented the award to you and link back to them.
Thanks to both Adventures of a Third Grade Teacher and 2B Honey Bunch!

2. Tell seven things about yourself.

1. I LOVE to read! I have spent my entire holiday vacation reading instead of doing other things (cleaning, laundry, etc.).
2. I am addicted to reality TV (Dancing With the Stars, American Idol, The Bachelor).
3. I am a huge football fan! Geaux Tigers and Saints!!
4. I have two awesome sons that are total opposites. My youngest is an athlete and loves to hunt and fish while my older son (who has Asperger Syndrome) loves video games and computers. If anyone watches The Big Bang Theory, I'm rasing a smaller version of Sheldon.
5. I plan on eating healthy and exercising when school starts back Monday. I figured if I actually typed this I might be more motivated!
6. My favorite movie of all time is Grease! I have seen it so many times I can't count!
7. I am such a procrastinator. I heard a saying one time that said "Procrastination is the habit of putting off until the day after tomorrow what should have been done day before yesterday!" That's me!!

3. Pass this on to 15 newly discovered blogs and let them know they've received the award.

This is really hard. :) I may just add some of my favorites. I'll be searching and adding over the next few days! I will start with my teaching partner!
