Dibels, Comprehension Freebie and a Giveaway!!

I'm not a huge fan of the Dibels assessment tool but, like it or not, that's what our district uses. We had benchmark testing last week. Since my kiddos last year appeared to have a weakness in their reading fluency, I have focused more on that this year. Now the fluency is much better but retell/comprehension is lower! Uggghhh!! Now I'm trying to find some ideas to help them improve in this area. I made these cards to use in small groups and reading stations. Click here for a copy. I'd love to hear comprehension strategies you use in your classroom.

On a more positive note, I am excited to have almost 50 followers! I have had so much fun blogging the last few weeks! I have loved reading other blogs and getting some new ideas. All the sweet comments everyone leaves provide so much encouragement! To celebrate, I am having my first giveaway!

Comprehension is such a hard thing! I give my students comprehension homework each night, then we review the strategies each day. The pure repetition of it all really helps.

  22. We just started using DIBELS this year, and I am not a huge fan either. I think it is very time consuming and give approximately the same result that a running record or DRA would. But we have to do what they tell us! I am in first grade so we just started the DORF last week for our midyear. We have lots of children sturggling with comprehension, as well!

  31. I have my 2nd graders write about everything they read (basal text, guided reading, independent reading). It gives them plenty of opportunities to practice comprehension skills - hope this helps!

  32. Hi! Reading Comprehension has always been a struggle for me. This month, we are focusing on non-fiction and it's been a challenge. To teach non-fiction I've looked closely at the different types of texts and gather various resources to create a template I'll be using this week during my guided reading. I'm hopeful it'll work because it'll allow me to see what it is my kids need. if you go to my blog you can download it. Hope this helps! (www.livelovelaughin2ndgrade.com)
